This site contains live recordings of Anglican Chant psalm singing from Christ Church Cathedral Dublin, a member of the Church of Ireland.
The recordings are taken from Eucharist and Evensong services sung by the cathedral choir. They are not professional recordings intended for commercial release, and therefore often have a lot of background noise.
They date back to 2008 or earlier when the Director of Music was Judy Martin, and the Assistant Director of Music was Tristan Russcher.
I do not have permission from anyone to publish these recordings. They come from an archive of recorded services that was compiled by the music department and available to the choir. I publish them online primarily for my own enjoyment as I love to listen back to them, and they remind me of the years I spent as a member of the cathedral choir.
I’m a huge fan of really good psalm singing, and I just love the consideration and care that went into the pointing and chant selection (as well as the singing) of these psalms. The words come from Coverdale’s translation as appeared in the Book of Common Prayer since the 17th century – and as such use slightly more arcane but very poetic language. The chants are often quite modern, with many written by living composers – so I hope they don’t mind me publishing their work! The singing style is pretty distinctive, with a pause on the penultimate syllable of each line.
